Parable of the new and the old In Matthew 13:52, Jesus said, “ Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. ” He told five parables about heaven. The first is the parable of the treasure hidden in the field, the second is the parable of the pearl of great price, the third is the parable of the net thrown into the sea, the fourth is the parable of the good householder, and the fifth is the parable of the new and the old. The new refers to the words of the new covenant, and the old refers to the law of the old covenant. Only those who can accurately unravel and interpret the Law and the New Covenant can become disciples of heaven.
